Catalan Opening

White combines the Queen's Gambit with a kingside fianchetto, putting the bishop on g2 to exert long-term pressure on the long diagonal and the d5-pawn. Massively popular at top level - Kramnik and Carlsen have used the Catalan to grind out countless wins. Black must decide between the Open Catalan (...dxc4) and the Closed Catalan (...c6 or ...Be7), each with deep theory.
